Fortunes Won When Sterope Scored In Cambridgeshire Race
(N. Z. P. A.—Special—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 29 (Rec. 7.5pm). A Preston businessman, Mr. J. B. Townley, owner of Sterope, winner of the Cambridgeshire, backed his horse at all odds from 50 to 1 downward and w’on £150,000. Schofield, the apprentice jockey who rode Sterope, was “briefed” by Harry Wragge, who mapped out the race for him in detail before the event. C. Smirke, rider of the second horse, Royal Tara, lodged an objection to the placings but. was overruled and was fined £25 for raising a frivolous objection. Sterope, a son of the 1937 Derby winner Midday Sun, was sold a. a yearling for 175 guineas and was bought for considerably less than that by Mr. Townley. The race resulted:—Sterope (Midday Sun-York Gala) 1, Royal Tara (Mieuxce-Scotch Gold) 2, Impeccable (His Highness-Mairi Bhan) and Patchouly (Chateau Bouscaut-Cicada), dead-heat, 3. Won by half a length, with two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.54 2-5. Jock Carson, 21-year-old jockey who was to have’ ridden Brink in the Cambridgeshire Stakes, IS miles, was not allowed to ride in the race because he held a sweepstake ticket on Wisley, one of the other competitors. The ticket would have been worth about £21,000 had Wisley won. A woman who linked the Cambridgeshire winner Sterope with the Cesarewitch winner Woodburn in a double, collected £60,000 for an outlay lof £6. Sterope has not been out of a 'place in his 14 starts-
