Thirteen Cubs Received into Marton Scouts At Special Ceremony

Known in the Boy Scout movement as a “going up’’ ceremony, 13 members of the Marton Cubs were received into tiie Marton Scout Troop at an impressive lunction held in the Victory Hali on Thursday night. Besides a full muster of Scouts and Cubs on parade, some 50 parents were also in attendance to watch the interesting proceedings. The Cubs—4o of them—were paraded under Cubmaster Mr. F. Rubery, and the assistant cubmaster, Mr. G. Jensen, while Scoutmaster Mr. J. Thomson, was in charge of the Scouts.

The Cub pack was inspected by Mill. L. Grut, chairman oi the Marton Boy Scouts' Association, and after some descriptive activities and jungle dances, the pack was appropriately assembled and tne 13 boys going up into the Scouts were farewelled by their cubmates. The Cubs, after crossing a bridge constricted of staves, were received by the scoutmaster, Mr. J. Thomson. Those initiated into the Scout movement were Peter North, Peter Saywell, Garry Hogan, Graham Velvin, Rex Kerr, Lock O’Shaughnessy, Alan Hamer, Hugh Fitzsimmons, Gavin Palmer and David Rosemergy.

In a short address. Mr, Grut re ferred to ilie excellent support of the parents *n their attendance that night and spoke in eulogistic terms of the work Messrs Rubery and Jensen had accomplished for the Cub movement in Marton.

A delicious supper was later served during which, Mr A. Slessor, a former scouter in Marton, spoke on the Rover Scout crew which formed in Bari during the war. He exhibited a khaki scarf made from a triangular bandage with a badge in the background depicting the arms of the city of Bari. He emphasised that the Scout movement was worldwide, even in time of war. OBITUARY. MRS. W. C. BROCK. The death occurred recently in the Wanganui Hospital of Mrs. Ina Lillith Brock, wife of Mr. W. C. Brock, Rira Street, Marton. She was 57 years of of age and had been in ill-health for some months. The late Mrs. Brock, who had lived all her life in Marton, married William Comp ten Brock in June, 1909. She was a member of the Marton junction Women’s Institute and was a member of the committee for many years. The funeral was held from St. Stephen’s Church, Marton, the service being conducted by the Rev. P. Gamlen, who also officiated at the graveside, Many beautiful wreaths adorned the casket testifying to high esteem in which the late Mrs. Brock was held by the community. The pallbearers at the church were Messrs P. Gronn, P. Green, K. Green, G. Thorburn, D. Dallas and R. Dallas, and at the cemetery Messrs W. Kaye, W. Tolley, W. Aprihana, G. Thorburn, I. Kaye and D. Dallas. Mrs. Brock is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. C. Kaye Taumarunui) and three grandchildren. Mrs. P. Green (Rata) is a sister and Messrs C. Thorburn (Rotorua) and C. Thorburn (Marton) are brothers. ANOTHER INCREASE IN MABTON BIRTHS RECORDED. For the second month in succession births in Marton have shown an increase compared with the corresponding period last year. Figures released yesterday afternoon at the close of business by the relieving postmaster in Marton, Mr. S. P. Davies, disclose there were 15 births during October, as against 13 for the same month in 1947. Deaths also showed a slight increase, but marriages were down by three. In October 1948 there were three deaths, as against one for the same month last year. Marriages totalled two, there being five for 1947. ' For the 10 months of this year the statsitics are:—Births, 131 (124); deaths, 29 (25); marriages, 47 (63). OPENING OF “ARAHINA” “Arahina." the Dominion Girl Guide Training Centre in Marton is to be officially opened tomorrow bv Lady Freyberg. Several nrominent people in the Girl Guide movement in New Zealand will be in attendance. Lady Freyberg is expected to arrive at 12.40 n.m. and will be entertained at lunch at “Arahina.” The official opening ceremony is timed for 2.45 p.m. CIVIC THEATRE TIME-TABLE. The manager of the Marton Civic Theatre. Mr. G. Hogan, advised last evenly that as from Monday, the summer timetable will operate for the screening of films. Pictures will now commence at 7.45 p.m. instead of 7.30 p.m. This is the normal practice during the sumer months. BROADWAY MARCHING TEAM. The Broadway marching team is to continue to march under the auspices of the New Zealand Marching Union, a decision to this effect being made at a special general meeting of the team in Marton this week. The team's delegate on the executive of the union. Mr. W. Bott presided over the meeting. SOFTBALL COMPETITIONS TO START WEEK EARLIER. The Marton Softball Sub-Associa-tion’s competitions are now to commence on Saturday, November 13, a week earlier than anticipated. This new date was selected at a meeting of the executive on Thursday night, when it was reported that the Revellers’ Marching team were sponsoring a grand display on Marton Park on November 13 and had invited the association to combine in this gala afternoon. Girls’ marching teams from seven centres are expected for the occasion. Three teams have so far entered for the women’s softball competition —Tigers, Cubs and Athletic. It was reported that efforts were at present being made to form teams at Nga Tawa and Kakariki. In the men’s competition two teams have affiliated—Tigers and Stars. There is a possibility of teams entering from the Marton District High School and Turakina. The fixtures for the first games are to be announced on Thursday, November 11. Affiliation fees were fixed as follows:—£2 for each club, £1 of which goes to the New Zealand Softball Association and 2s 6d for each player, or £3 5s for a team of 10.
