Women’s Institute Thrift Competition

In connection with the half-yearly meeting of the Wanganui District Federation of Women’s Institutes held at Fordell on Wednesday, a thrift competition look place, and numerous attractive articles were on view.

Made from the humble sugar bag were to be seen, aprons, peg bags and such like, all gaily embroidered with different coloured wools. Quills, cushions and aprons in attractive patch work were interesting items. Well-made children's garments from cut down adult clothes and from left over pieces of material were shown, also a baby’s frock daintily made from a cork bag and handkerchiefs made from salt bags which were embroidered, needlerun and edged with lace. Toy animals and slippers made from home cured and dyed lambswool, a tea cosy fashioned from strips of coloured felt, rugs from old silk stockings, a cushion in raised petal work from many coloured odd scraps of silk, papier mache and felt dolls, a stool made from the frame of an old clock, barbola broocnes, aprons front odd pieces of different floral prints, and a pair of hall curtains made from a large chenille table cloth, dyed and ornamented with a wide border worked in coloured wools. Other collections of thrift clothing showed a variety of garments for children, all expertly made and finished, and there was a number of articles made from flour bags. The judges for the competitions were Mrs. J. Glasgow and Mrs. I. Mclntyre.

Tenth Birthday at Rangataua The tenth birthday of the Rangataua W.I. was held in th e Town Hall on October 18, Mrs Row presiding. The hall had been nicely decorated in the institute colours, yellow and black; and huge bowls of narrissus and daffodils. Apologies were received from Mrs. Dellow, Federated President, Mangaweka, Horopito, Ohingaiti, Raurimu, and National Park Women's Institutes and Mrs. Slater. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and sister institutes were well represented, namely Raetihi, OhakunePokaka, and Utiku. Also present were members of neighbouring W.D.F.F’s. and Plunket Society. All representatives expressed good wishes for “many happy returns’’ and after cutting the handsome cake; made and iced bv Mrs. F. Nicol; received lovely shoulder sprays. The candles were lit by Mrs. W. Fraser, senior member and extinguished by Mrs. McLean, youngest member. A programme of songs, duets, competition, recitations, sketches, and a play was much enjoyed, those participating being Mesdames Mitchell, Brunton, McLaren, Barclay, Row, R. Remus, R. Nicol, Hill, Gudopp and Goldsmith. The usuual sumptuous afternoon tea was in the capable hands if Mesdames Jeffery and Hull. At the door, Mesdames George and Hodson welcomed guests, and presented lucky numbers, of which 81 was held by Mrs. Drayton. who received a prize. Other competition winners were Mrs. W. Fraser (memory test) and Mrs. Gudopp (premier flower). Five members received birthday posies. At the Ohakune bulb show, held on October 8. Rangataua won first place I'or institute courts; and mention must be made of the beautiful hand-work displayed by all entranst in this class, the judge must indeed have had a difficult task.
