Powerful New Cruiser
Washington Oct 26 (Reed 6 pm).—The U.S.S. Desmoines, 17,000 tons, the heaviest “heavy” cruiser in the world, the first warship to mount completely automatic rapid-fire eight inch guns, will be commissioned early next month.
Her eight-inch guns can fire four times faster than any guns of the same or larger calibre. The Desmoines is the first of an entirely new class of heavy cruisers capable of at least 30 knots. Her secondary armament consists of 12 dual purpose five-inch guns and 20 anti-aircraft three inch guns.
