King's Short 74Word Speech
(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright.) Reed. 11.15 p.m. London, Sept. 14 His Majesty’s speech opening the special session of Parliament today is believe;! to be the shortest opening speech ever made by a British sovereign—74 words. His Majesty said he had summoned Parliament to meet at this time “to give further consideration to a Bill to amend the Parliament Aet of 1911, on which there was disagreement between the two Houses last session.” The King said it was not proposed to bring any other business before Parliament in the present session. Their Majesties drove in state to the House of Lords with an escort of Household Cavalry in lull dress. The route from Buckingham Palace was crowded from early morning. The traditional opening ceremony was held in the Peers robing room, where the Lords are meeting until the chamber is repaired.
