Death Of Mr. A. E. Ekstedt; Well-Known Golf Professional
The death occurred in Wanganui on Tuesday of Mr- A. E. Ekstedt, the well-known golf professional.
Sixty years of age, the late Mr. Exstedt was a prominent figure in golf for a large number of years, An early pupil of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, Mr. Ekstedt later entered the employment of the late Mr. J. B. Gerrand. Becoming interested in golf, Mr. Ekstedt joined the Manawatu Golf Club and under excellent tuition became a most proficient player, meeting with marked success in the club’s championship and open events He won the former in 1924, 1925, 1926, 1929, 1930, and 1931, and the latter in 1922, 1923, 1926, 1929, 1931, and 1932. He also competed on several occasions at the New Zealand open and amateur tournaments.
Mr. Ekstedt was on service with the New Zealand artillery in the First World War, during which he was wounded. After his return to Palmerston North and following his golfing successes he became professional to the Awatapu Golf Club, many former members of which owe their proficiency today to his excellent coaching. In 1940 he went to Belmont (Wanganui) as club professional, but subsequent to the Second World War engaged in business in Wanganui. Of a quiet and unassuming disposition, Mr. Ekstedt had a very large number of friends in both golfing and business circles. He leaves his widow to mourn his passing. Mr. Ekstedt was interested in Freemasonry and was a member of Lodge United, Manawatu, E.C.
