Royal Navy Personnel For N.Z. Frigates
Recd. 7.5 p.m. London, June 8. In preparation for manning four of the six frigates ordered by the New Zealand Governmet. 140 former Royal Navy ratings signed on with the Royal New Zealand Navy for three years. They will enter Victoria Baracks, Portsmouth, shortly before kitting up and will take courses before being posted to the frigates.
At the end of the month they will be joined by personnel sent from New Zealand in the corvettes Arabis and Arbutus, which are due at Portsmouth on June 28. After trials and "working up” the four frigates will sail towards the end of October for New Zealand, where they are expected to pay off in time for Christmas leave. The two remaining frigates will sail for New Zealand some time next year.
