Mercy Flight To Chathams

(P.A.) Auckland, June 7. A flight from Auckland to the Chatham Islands was made today by a Catalina flying-boat of the No. 5 Squadron, Royal New Zealand Air Force, to pick up a seriously ill member of the hospital staff there. Rough conditions prevented the aircraft from taking off with the natient who is suffering from ear trouble, and the return flight was postponed until tomorrow.

The Catalina, commanded by Flight Lieutenant Warnes, left Mechanics’ Bay at 7.40 a.m. and arrived at its 'destination at 1.21 pm. It will fly today to Wellington and land at Evans Bay. The patient will be transferred to another aircraft and will be flown to Christchurch for admission to hospital. This course was decided on when permission was not granted for the Catalina to land on Lyttelton harbour.
