Liner Mataroa Resumes Trading To New Zealand
(P.A.) Wellington, May 31. After six years' absence from the Dominion trade, the re-conditioned Shaw Savill liner Mataroa, is expected at Wellington on June 9 from Southampton. She is bringing 382 passengers for New Zealand. Half her specially prepared passenger accommodation is taken up by assisted immigrants, of whom there are 125 aboard. The Mataroa is one of several ships specially fitted to carry assisted immigrants. The Mataroa last visited Wellington in 1941, after which she was fitted out to carry 1800 troops. Part of her equipment now is mechanical ventilation and a heating system which controls the temperature of air to suit varying climatic conditions of the voyage to New Zealand. The Tamaroa, a sister ship to‘ the Mataroa is being similarly converted for carrying both tourists and immigrants to New Zealand under the Government migration scheme. The Tamaroa is expected to be ready to sail for New Zealand shortly.
