SENIOR RUGBY SEASON OPENS IN WANGANUI NEXT SATURDAY
Senior Rugby matches for the Wanganui Club Championship will start next Saturday. Grade matches will begin a week later. Following is the draw for the first match of the senior cup: Marist v Pirates, Spriggens Park, at 3 p.m. Waverley v Kaierau, at Waverley, at 3 p.m. Tech. 0.8. v Wanganui 0.8., Spriggens Park, at 1.30 p.m. PRACTICE MATCHES LAST SATURDAY Most Rugby clubs in the Wanganui district engaged in practice matches on Saturday. Kaierau sent five teams to play against Hawera Club teams at Hawera. Results were: Hawera Athletic seniors 9 (three penalty goals) v. Kaierau seniors 3 (a try); Kaierau Junior A 8 (a converted try and a try) v. Hawera Athletic 5; Kaponga 13, v. Kaierau Junior B 3; Kaierau thirds 3, v. Hawera Athletic thirds 3; Hawera Athletic fourths 16, v. Kaierau fourths nil. WAVERLEY PLAYS ELTHAM. At Waverley a strong Eltham team which included the Taranaki halfback Cameron, and Murray (fiveeighths), beat Waverley by 11 to nil. The Waverley team went well in the forwards and got a fair share of the ball, and R. Best, formerly Pirates half-back, played a great game at the base of the Waverley scrum. Waverley five-eighths, in contrast to the opposition, however, were flat-footed—-waited for the ball to come to them instead of moving up. C. Dallison played soundly at full-back. R. Dallison and Stewart went well in a good pack. Waverley, provided the side can sharpen up its rearguard in attack, will be hard to beat this season. PIRATES OVERWHELM OLD BOYS. Played in quarter-hour spells on the racecourse, Pirates, winners of last year's Wanganui Rugby championship, overwhelmed Wanganui and Old Boys by 39 points to nil.
