THREE FAVOURITES WIN AT AWAPUNI

FREYBERG HANDICAP WON BY YASDA Favourite/; won three of the first four races at Awapuni on Saturday, when the Manawatu Racing Club s summer meeting was concluded, but afterwards backers were a little off the mark, and the day’s racing finished with a winner at double figures. The weather was fine, with a strong breeze, and the track was a trifle slower than on the earlier days, following rain. The attendance was not quite up to that registered on the holidays, but the totalisator turnover was satisfactory, £82,885 being handled, as against £90,997 on the final day last year. The aggregate for the meeting was £262,592, a decrease of £8136 compared with £270,728 last year. GAY STROLLER BEATEN Backed as unbeatable for the Freyberg Handicap, Gay Stroller finished out of a place, being badly galloped on in a scramble which took place on the home turn. The winner turned up in the second favourite, the Coronach gelding Yasda, who narrowly defeated an outsider in Barrage. Argumentative, The Denbigh, Morotai and Gay Stroller were the leaders as they ran out of the straight, and at the six furlongs Morotai, Gay Stroller and Yasda followed Argumentative. Gay Stroller joined Morotai in the lead a little further on, and then Joe’s Cobber dashed up with Citation, these two, with Morotai and Gay Stroller, rounding the home turn together, just ahead of Yandra and Yasda. Morotai headed the others as they straightened up, and then Yasda ranged up on the outside. Barrage came through on the inside in the last furlong and had Yasda doing his best, running him to a nose. The Denbigh came home well for third, a length and a-half away, only a head in front of Yandra, with Morotai fifth, just in front of Gay Stroller and Citation. Gay Stroller returned to the birdcage bleeding profusely from a stripped hock. OWNER TRAINER’S “DOUBLE” The Otaki owner-trainer G. S. Walton brought off a “double” in the open sprint, the Wood Handicap, and the nine-furlong Christmas Handicap, with Castlebrae and The Stormovik respectively. Brown Derby was a hot favourite for the sprint but never got closer than fourth. Petre Mar and Craven made the running and were followed to the straight by Wild Note, Julius Caesar, Specialist and Castlebrae. The last-named took charge a furlong from home and in a close finish won from Petre Map and Wild Note, with Specialist and Brown Derby close up. Flying Dink and Lowry Bay led Mesalliance and The Stormovik out of the straight in the Christmas Handicap, and then Aiderman ran up to join Flying Dink. The Stormovik improved his position to attend Flying Dink into the straight. He was joined by Mesalliance at the distance and the pair drew away, The Stormovik getting in the last stride for a narrow win. Two lengths back was Tremello, who came from well back, and then came Sailor Boy and Flying Dink. SUCCESS OF FAVOURITES Baksoon, a short-priced favourite, held off Glen Urquhart's challenge in the Tiritea Hurdles to win handily after following the pacemaker, On Time, most of the distance. On Time was a handy third, with Incident three lengths back, five lengths ahead of the disappointing Merger. Sterling Gold lost his rider at the first hurdle. The Missioner, a Revelation colt from the successful Hastings stable of J. H. .Jefferd and Mrs L. Campbell, gave the leading horseman, W. J. Broughton, a winning ride after a long string of some 40 losing mounts. The Missioner ranged up to the pacemaker, Brig o' Doon, three furlongs from home, and then ran past to win by two lengths. Shenandoah came home well for third, just ahead of Lord Bradbury, with Sly Gold and Cheerful Night, almost in line. The Coronach gelding Deep Sea was installed a warm favourite for the hack sprint, the Westbury Handicap, and had no difficulty in winning comfortably. He followed Tranquil Gold to the half-mile and then took command to run home four lengths ahead of an outsider in Monito, who just held off Blank Cheque for second place. Molly Adair was almost In line with Blank Cheque, and then came Afton Water and Royal Cambria. VADOZ IMPROVES Vadoz, runner-up to Harleyholm the previous day, had a rather easy win in the Juvenile Handicap, taking the lead after Jacquinot Bay had made the early running, and holding off Pitoitoi, the favourite, without any trouble. Kentucky Moon was a fair third, ahead of Festal and Deseado. Broughton’s mount, Arctic Circle, was best backed in the final event, but a surprise was in store, Shenandoah, having his second start on the day, coming home at double-figure odds. After Kelmont, Meteorina and Lucy Bian had made the running from Gyration, Snenandoah came from well back to join Lucy Bian and Commercial on the home turn. Going on, he won by half a length from Foxtonian, who was a length in front of Balcairn. Almost in line were Arctic Circle, Meteorina and Gyration. Balcairn returned a doublefigure place dividend.
