CHINESE COMMUNISTS STORM RAILWAY

Nanking, Dec. 26 As though heralding Christmas Day, a large force of Communists stormed Chagwu, a large railway centre 45 miles north-west of Mukden, 10 times yesterday, according to dispatches reaching Nanking today. Under the cover of a heavy artillery barrage, the 7th Communist Division continued its fierce offensive on this key front. Government reports claim that the rebels were repulsed, with casualties on both sides. Fierce fighting is continuing in the Sinmin-Changwu-Hsin Li-Tun triangle. Unoffic’-il reports say the Communists are bombing and strafing the Nationalists’ positions in Manchuria. The enforcement of the news censorship in Manchuria, with immediate effect, was ordered by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's headquarters in Mukden today. Announcing the order to newspapermen at Mukden, the authorities stressed that it would be strictly enforced, and reminded them of the death penalty for anyone infringing martial law, which was proclaimed a few days ago.
