Fire Causes Panic And Many Deaths On Chinese Steamer
(N.Z.P.a. —Reuter—Copyright.) Reed. 11 p.m. Shanghai, Dec. 28. Five hundred are feared to have been drowned at Hankow yesterday morning when a fire aboard the Chinese river steamer Vanshing, caused a panic among the 700 passengers, most of whom plunged into the icy Yangtse. More than 70 bodies were recovered. The fire was put out only after it had spread to three other steamers and more than a dozen junks.
