FORMER PREMIER OF THURINGIA ESCAPES TO AMERICAN ZONE
SAID HE LEFT BECAUSE OF “LIE OF DEMOCRACY” (N.Z. P. A.—Reutei—Copyright.) Recd. 8 p.m. Munich, Dec. 26 Dr. Rudolf Paul, former Premier of Thuringia, in the Russian zone in Germany, arrived in Munich on Christmas Eve and will shortly leave for an undisclosed destination. Dr. Paul’s arrival in Munich partly clears up a mystery which had lasted since September, when he disappeared from the Russian zone. Special guards on the frontier had orders to stop Dr. Paul if he attempted to cross into the American zone. He was reported on September 13 to have crossed the border on foot, b..t General Clay (U.S.A.) stated on September 18 that he had no knowledge of Dr. Paul’s whereabouts. Dr. Paul said he left the Russian zone because he could no longer watch with bound hands the growing lie of democracy in the eastern zone of Germany. His decision to flee to the American zone came when Russian - controlled newspapers stated that he was a leading opponent of the Marshall Plan, although he had publicly supported the plan.
