Housewives Vainly Try To Buy Supplies
Recd. 11 p.m. New York, Dec. 27. The storm, which extended from New England to Washington, D.C., cost at least 55 lives, including 23 in New Jersey. One hundred thousand New York city employees were ordered tonight to report for work to aid the thousands of weary Sanitation Department workers struggling to free the city from yesterday s record snowfall. Railways, bus services and subways were fighting back to some semblance of schedule. The delivery of fuel, milk and bread was still held up this afternoon by snow-choked streets, and housewives in all sections of the metropolis’tried vainly to buy supplies. Fuel difficulties also existed in Boston, Philadelphia and Connecticut. The police have begurt removing the thousands of cars‘that were stalled and buried in snow throughout New York. Motorists have been warned not to use their cars over the week-end because of the icy roads. Mayor O’Dwyer tonight arrived at La Guardia airport from California, where he was on vacation, to take direct charge of the task of freeing the city from the snow’s grip. His airliner was the first to land at La Guardia Field since the storm began. The first airliner to leave La Guardia took off this afternoon, but airport officials said few aircraft would leave while road conditions prevented passengers from reaching the airfield. Police Commissioner Arthur Wallander said: "The overall picture is that the city is in pretty good shape. The next twenty-four hours should bring a great measure of relief.” Los Angeles, in contrast to New York, reported a record-breaking temperature of 87 degrees.
