SCHOLARSHIP OFFERED N.Z. AT COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES

Wellington, Dec. 26 A scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines will be awarded annually, beginning with the school year 1948-49, to a resident of New Zealand on the recommendation of the Minister of Education, according to an announcement by Dr. Ben H. Parker, president of the Colorado School. The scholarship pays for all tuition, now 425 dollars a year, and is renewable to a maximum of four yean provided the student maintains a satisfactory record and deposits special student fees. Summer session tuition, living and other personal expenses are not included. The Colorado School is internationally known for its training leading to engineering degrees in mining, metallurgy geology, petroleum production ana petroleum refining, with options in fuel engineering, geophysics and elective courses in production and utilisation of cements, refractories, clays and other non-me-tallic minerals. The applicant must receive the recommendation of the Minister of Education, to whom he should make application early, as a recommendation must reach the president of the school by June 15. The applicant must satisfy the entrance requirements of the school. He may have had several years of college work or may recently have completed a preparatory education. He may not be a student in attendance at the Colorado School. At the time of application he must be a bona fide resident of New Zealand and should have an aptifude for engineering, possessing character, courage, energy, determination and ability to think clearly. Mr. Parker gave as his reasons for offering the scholarship that the young men receiving it may be benefited by the educational advantages offered by one of the oldest, most thorough and best-known mining schools in the world, and that the school may attract to itself young men of true engineering type from New Zealand who will be a credit both to New Zealand and the Colorado School.
