FRUIT ROTTED IN AUCKLAND SHOPS DURING HOLIDAYS
(P.A.) Auckland, Dec. 28. Hundreds of pounds worth of fruit and vegetables rotted in greengrocers’ shops over the holiday period and with rapid growth accelerated by the rain during Friday night, growers also suffered losses. Although shops were supposed to close at 9 o'clock on Christmas Eve, several stayed open for an hour or more later in an endeavour to clear produce which would otherwise have been lost. One shop, which had been selling strawberries at up to 6s a chip earlier in the day, reduced the price successively to 2s 6d and 2s,
