DAVIS CUP PLAYERS EXTENDED IN N. ISLAND TENNIS TOURNEY
(P.A.) New Plymouth, Dec. 28. In two games in succession today, members of the New Zealand Davis Cup team lost sets in the quarterfinals ot the men’s singles at the North Island tennis championships at Hawera. Spectators were unexpectedly treated to the best match to date when F. Lusk (Auckland) took the New Zealand single champion and Davis Cup player, K. S. McKenzie (Seatoun) to the third set in the quarter final. McKenzie lost only two sets in singles last year before he travelled with the Davis Cup team. Another Davis Cup player, J. E. Robson (Otago), was given a strenuous game in the quarter-final by A. W. Tills (Auckland). The first set went to Robson, 6-0, but it was not one-sided. Tills kept him extended in the second and eventually took it 6-2. The first four games of the third set were strongly contested but Robson made no mistake with the remainder of the set which ended 6-2. The semi-finalists found so far are: Men's Singles: Robson, McKenzie and G. Radonich (Auckland). Women’s Singles. —Miss B. Beverley (Waikato), Miss E. Attwood (Auckland), Miss M. Kerr (Otago), Miss B. Potter (Auckland). Men's Doubles: Painler and McKenzie (Wellington), O. M. Bold (Lower Hutt) and Robson (Women’s Doubles.—Mesdames Painter and J. McVay (Wellington), Misses Beverley and Potter, Misses A. E. Johnson and H. Redwood (Auckland), Misses Attwood and Kerr.
