YEARLING TROUT RELEASES

(0.C.1 Taihape. Sept. 28. A very good release of yearling trout, was ma ip by members of the Taihape committee ot the Acclimatisation Society from the pond in Goldfinch Street last weekend Weather conditions were excellent, and the fish released were, in the opinion of sportsmen, the finest yearling yet seen. A big percentage had attained an average length of eight inches. A 30 per cent release is usually regarded as good, but in this instance it wa s estimated that at least 80 per cent of the original allocation had survived the critical fry stage to make a pond ot yearling I hat reflected great credit on the pond custodian. Fish of this size make a strong demand on the oxygen in the small cans used for transporting them to the rivers, and speed in handling and transport is an essential. That these objectives were attained t s shown by the fact that reported losses en route were only 14 fish in the 30 or more cans, some of which were carried over 20 miles by road. When the last of the fish had been released, the dam and pond were cleaned in preparation for a fresh stock of fry for next September's release of yearlings. These fry are expected soon, with 63,000 brown trout fry which will go direct into the Hautapu River. This year’s successful liberation, with the improved condition of local waters last year, indicates that excellent fishing may be expected for the coming season. SCHOOL BASKETBALL.
