RESTORATION OF LIQUOR

TO MASTERTON PEOPLE TO HAVE THEIR SAY AS TO A TRUST (P A.) Wellington, Feb, 24. So that local residents will have the clearest opportunity of giving effective expression to their views on the methods to be adopted for restoration of the liquor trade in their district, the Minister of Justice (Mr. Mason) has convened a meeting with local body representatives at Masterton on Thursday. “The restoration vote in that district cannot become effective without further legislation,” said Mr- Mason, in an interview to-day. “In view of the suggestion t hat, a trust may be desired by local people, the Government proposes to take a poll, or polls, for guidance of Parliament on the question of whether an ordinary system of a special trust, or trusts, should be instituted. The area does not appear to form one single convenient geographical unit, and it may, therefore, appear very likely that the local people would prefer that the issue bo put separately for the two separate areas.” That question and the question of the boundary between the areas would be the central points for discussion at the meeting, said Mr. Mason.
