NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
Mrs. Elizabeth Remington, one of Wanganui’s oldest residents, celebrated her ninetieth birthday recently. Born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, in 1857, she arrived in Wellington by sailing ship .with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Pawson, in 1858. Coming straight to Wanganui, Mr. Pawson established his family and became one of the pioneer business men of the dictrict. Mrs. Remington, then a baby of but a year old, has seen the city grow from a settlement garrisoned by British troops and threatened by the invasion of hostile Maori forces, to the thriving centre it is today. In 1880 she married the late Mr. W. R. Remington and the couple celebrated their golden wedding in 1930. Mr. Remington, who died in 1937, was well known as a keen rifle shot, and won the New Zealand Championship Rifle Belt in 1886.. Eldest of Mr. Rawson's family of six, Mrs. Remington is the only surviving member, and of her own family of five has now four children, ten grandchildren and nine great-grand-children.
