ANNOUNCEMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN TWO DAYS
Recd. 8.20 p.m. Canberra, Jan. 30 The Prime Minister (Mr. Chifley) expects the announcement of the appointment of the new Governor-General within two days. He said to-day that, as indicated previously, he believed the announcement would be made prior to the King’s departure for South Africa. This means that it might be delayed in Australia until Saturday. A formal recommendation to the King is known to have gone forward. “Mr. Chifley, of course, has never mentioned the name of Mr. McKell,” says the “Sydney Sun” correspondent in Canberra, “but it is understood that his statement to-day is designed to relieve uneasiness within the New South Wales Parliamentary Labour Party, which wants to gets its new leader into harness as soon as possible for this year’s election.” ««•••••••••••••••••••••••
