DELAY NOT UNDERSTOOD IN AUSTRALIA

Reed. 6 p.m. Canberra, Jan. 30 Speculation is becoming intense here about the reasons for delaying announcing the name of the Duke of Gloucester’s successor as GovernorGeneral of Australia. It is believed

that further cables have been exchanged during the last week between the King and the Prime Minister about Mr Chifley’s recommendation that Mr. McKell should be appointed. Although Mr Chifley stated on Monday that he had no idea when the announcement would be made, he admitted he had anticipated it would be made between the arrival in England of the Duke of Gloucester and the departure of the King for South Africa. The Duke reached England about a week ago and the King embarks on the Vanguard to-morrow and sails for Capetown on Saturday. Whether the King has sought the name s of alternative nominees is not known, but Canberra authorities are at a loss to find any other explanation for the delay. The King’s departure for South Africa would not necessarily r.-ern the cessation of discussions between him and Mr. Chifley, but in the past it has not been th e practice of the King to delegate the powers relating to the Dominions to the Council of State. •••••••••••••••«*•••••••••
