FIVE AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES IN WORLD RECORD CLASS

A SELECTOR’S CLAIM Reed. 9 p.m. Perth, Jan. 30 The Australian selector, Hugh Moriarty, says that Australia has five athletes in world class capable of winning Olympic titles. The men ne names are: John Treloar (New South Wales), 100 and 200 metres. Jack Bartram (Victoria), 400 metres. John Winter (Western Australia), high jump. T. Bruce (South Australia), broad jump. C. Green (Western Australia), 100 and 400 metre hurdles. Moriarty says that though George Campbell is tne most idolised runner in Australia, he would have no hope of beating the world’s best middle distance men, as his best mile time is 4min. 17sees. Bruce’s Australian record broad jump of 24 feet lOi inches was the world’s best leap for the past two years. Winter retired from the championships after setting the Australian high jump record of six leet 6 3-8 inches. Only two better jumps have been recorded in the world during the past 12 months. Moriarty considers that if Winter had continued he would have cleared six teet seven inches. Treloar, Bartram and Green are young and are not yet at their peak.
