THEY WEAR" “SWOON SUHS” TO THE BEACH THESE DAY'S

During the holidays there was little chance of wearing the sun-suits, beach and play suits, of which there was a bewildering array in the shops early in the season. The weather man was very unkind to the holiday-makers and until a few days ago the sun has been very shy this summer—if it could be called summer.

UnLl lh e week-end just passed the beaches have not been very gay, or formed a background for feminine charm clad in the latest beach-wear. Gone are the days when one faced the sea in a bathing suit. Since fashion designeis have caused modern femininity to go sun-crazy, the young women of to-day have been introduced t' a new vocabulary for the various play and sun-suits. Such names a s “Sunsoaker,” “Suncatcher,” “Bloomer Togs,’’ “Sarong Suit,” “Scamp Suits,’’ “Mescicana,” “Week - Enders” and “Swoon Suit” are among the two dozen names listed in the beach clothes. “Thank s to the unseasonable weather our gay beach togs are not unpacked and are likely to remain at the bottom of the travelling case,” said one fair visitor to the city, who had all th e beauty and grace to show off to advantage one of the new beach suits. The seaside and .camping girl donned slacks during the doubtful weather. These garments, to look well on wonfen, need to be of good cut. Most of the slacks seen were factory-made trousers of grey flannel. And as one male onlooker on the beach remarked the effect is not exactly glamorous; in fact it’s ugly.” And ugly seemed ih e right word at the moment, for the wrong type of women wore the wrong type of slacks or flannel “bags.” The tatter the wearer, the lighter the slacks. Trousers, for feminine wear, need to be tailored to measurement, so that they will be comfortable to wear as weli as to see. Girls and young women with slim figures look smart in well-cut slacks when the blouse or jacket, and shoes, harmonise with the outfit, but not so the “not-so-slim” figure, especially if short and broad of beam. Several visitors to th e city recently were smartly dressed in slacks generously made. One suit in mid* night blue nad wide trousers, and blue and white blouse with matching floppy hat. Another outfit in deep dusky pink was equally smart.
