WANGANUI EAST CLUB

In fine weather the Wanganui East Bowling Clnb opened another season. There was a large attendance of old and new members—.so great was the number that the green was unable to accommodate them all. There was also a large gathering of ladies. The green, as usual, was in perfect playing order but slightly on the heavy side. The committee has put in a great amount of work on the surroundings, which as the season advances, will be a blaze of colour.

Players were welcomed by the president, Mr. R. J. Bell. He complimented the club on its success in competitions last season and trusted players would have a happy time during the present season. Miss A. Bell, daughter of the president, threw the first kitty, while Mr. A. W. Jones, patron and former president, played the first bowl.

Miss Bell and Mrs. W. J. McKernan, wife of the vice-president, assisted by lady supporters of the club, attended to the afternoon tea.

Teams representing the president and vice-president played a full rinkgame, resulting in a win for the latter by nine points.

Results, President’s teams mentioned first, are:—Willis, Cade, Bellringer, Benefield 20, v. R. Gray, McGregor, H. Haworth, Gaunt 21; Brandon, Hodson, Gould, Raine 22, v. Hutchins, McCracken, Taylor 18; Jull. Dempster. H. Stewart 27, v. Walpole, Frank Green, C. Haworth 24; Callaghan, Dempsey, White, McPherson 16, v. A. Gray, H. Northey, H. Totals, President 144, vice-President, 153.

At the tea adjournment Mr. A. W. Jones thanked members for their kind gesture when recently, through the committee, they made a presentation to him of a set of pipes.
