CARD AT OTAKI

OPENING DAY EVENTS AT SPRING MEETING

Judging by the fields engaged to-day at Otaki for the opening day of the spring meeting, there is no dearth of horses in prospect for the current season. With 41 acceptors for the Puhi Maiden, the club has divided the field to provide two separate events, as was done last year. On that occasion divisions were required for the Second Puhi Maiden, but that may not be necessary to-day. Fields in the two open events are also of large dimensions, but some dual engagements will ensure a little weeding out.

Track conditions may affect the size i of the fields, for the Otaki course, i especially down the back stretch, is generally fairly heavy after such rain ; as has been experienced during the ; week. Betting is win-and-place, and I the handling of £58,311 last year indi- ! cates how well the club is supported I by city enthusiasts. i Recent form suggests that Black Plato, The Grand. Barrage, Silver Rod, Behave, Flahuluk, Leighon's Glory, Lord Darnley and Ganges may have many supporters in the Ling Memorial Stakes. Caithness has been a winner on the Otaki course, and Foxella was a winner there last soring. Behave. Lord Darnley and, The Grand may be a likely trio. Master Dash has a big impost in the open sprint, and if the going is at all holding he may not be a starter. He i is of outstanding class. Tutere, Theo- , critus, Specialist. Battle Dance. Salmi, • Peter Gazelle, Zealander, Robin’s Re- . ward and Peter Theio may make most 1 appeal. Zealander was an impressive I juvenile last season. Salmi's form at I Foxton suggested that her turn should not be far off. Favourites may include Peter Gazelle, Salmi and Peter Theio. The issue in the hack events appears very open, and the chances are that there may be some surprises. The following may appeal:— Kapiti Hurdles.—Foreign Coin, Greek : Dancer, Gold Claim.
