WANGANUI TECHNICAL COLLEGE BOARD

DIRECT REPRESENTATION SOUGHT BY CITY Because county representatives had a majority, it was a waste of time appointing a member of the C'ty Council to the electing committee of the Wanganui Technical College Board of Managers, said Cr. S. J. Harris at the council’s monthly meeting last night. The counties of Wanganui and Waitotara each appointed a representative to the electing committee, the function of which was to appoint one representative for the three Jodies to the Technical College Eoard of Managers.

Consequently, the City Council’s representative on the electing committee was in the minority and might just as well remain at home. The other two had all the say, Cr. Harris added.

“He has no hope of selecting a representative for the board,” said Cr. J. C. Batt, who recalled that at one time the Mayor (Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.) was chairman of the Board of Managers, but lost his seat when the two county representatives voted for somebody else. On the motion of the Mayor, the council decided to ask the Minister of Education (Mr Mason) for a more equitable basis of electing representatives to the board. “In view of the city’s size we should have direct representation, the same as we have on the Girls’ College Board of Governors/’ the Mayor added.

The subject was introduced when a letter from the Wanganui Technical College advised that Mr. T. Dix, one of the local body representatives on lihe Board of Managers, retired on August 6. It would be. necessary for the couhcil to appoint a representative to the electing committee Co make an appointment to the board. The Mayor was appointed to represent the council on the committee.
