PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC

IMPROVEMENT SUGGESTED FOR VICTORIA AVENUE A suggestion that the parking ot cycles hi Victoria Avenue oe pet milted only outside the kerbs was made by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in a recent letter to the Wanganui City Council. It was considered by the Works Committee and submitted to the chief traffic inspector (Mr. H. E. Tipper) for a report.

This information was contained in a report from the Works Committee which was adopted by the council at its monthly meeting "last night. The Junior Chamber of Commerce, the committee stated, had made several suggestions which it felt, might effect an improvement in the interests of pedestrians using Victoria Avenue.

Another suggestion was that pedestrians should be educated in keeping to the left, as this would assist materially in preventing situations which occurred daily due to pedestrians congregating. The junior Chamber considered that a central white line should be painted on each path with appropri-ately-worded notices placed at intervals along the street. “The inspectors arc fully sensible of the difficulties with which they are confronted.” the Works Committee stated. “With the police officers on duty, they endeavour at all times, without irritation to pedesUwis, to induce them to move free^ along the foot paths.”
