RIOTS IN INDIA
PROTEST AGAINST SALES TAX Reed. 6 p.m. Bombay, March 5. Six persons are reported to have 4 been killed to-day in an election clash, involving Congress Party workers, near Ranchi, in the Behar Province. Police rushed to the scene and fired on the crowd. Nine were killed in other incidents during the past 24 hours. One was killed and manv Injured when the police fired on a crowd of 4000 attacking a food supply centre at Cheyyar. 90 miles south of Madras, in the North Arcot district, after they had failed to get a particular brand of rice. A crowd in Dacca, agitating against the increase of the sales tax, raided three cinemas, smashed the furniture and projectors, and set fire to the screen. -The Bengal Government has now suspended the increase in the sales tax. The Government of Madras has sanctioned the prosecution of a High Court Judge, Mr. Justice Byers, for causing the death of a boy by a pistol shot on February 25, says the corresoondent of the Associated Press or America. The boy was killed during riots in sympathy with the navy mutiny at Bombay. The charge against Byers is culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Feeling ran high concerning the case. The Government gave an assurance that Byers would not sit and disnose of cases pending the hearing of the charge.
