STONES THROWN BY MOBS
ALEXANDRIA RIOTS ATTACKS ON BRITISH CLUBS
Recd. 7 p.m. London, March 5. Several demonstators were wounded, some seriously, when Egyptian police again opened fire and charged with batons in an endeavour to disperse stone-throwing mobs attacking British clubs in Alexandria to-day. Five Egyptians injured during yesterday’s demonstrations died, bringing the death roll to 22, including two British soldiers.
Sidky Pasha flew from Cairo to Alexandria to-day. Egyptian troops and police have been posted at all street corners, while lorry-loads of troops patrolled the main streets. British evacuated, all hostels during the night. Sidky Pasha toured the riot area and conferred with the Governor and the police commandant, while a crowd outside cheered and cried: "Long live Sidky, liberator of the nation.’’ ,
A mob demanding "the evacuation of the British troops” surrounded and brought to a standstill Sidky's car when the Premier set out on a tour of the city. They refused to move and Sidky was forced to complete the journey in an Egyptian Army truck. The city to-night is much quieter and conditions almost- normal.
