HOTTEST JANUARY FOR YEARS AT ROTORUA
With lhe thermometer attaining a maximum of 92.9 deg. in the shafle, on Saturday it was the hottest January day experienced for a number fo years, and decidedly the warmest day this summer. Sunday’s maximum temperature in the shade was 90.8 deg. and until a cool easterly breeze sprang up at four o’clock conditions were very trying.
Scrub fires in the outer areas brought the fire brigade out. twice on Saturday, but there was little dam-
age to property. The air patrol over the forestry areas was in operation constantly during the week-end, but no outbreaks of fire were seen. There are still a large number of in Rotorua and at the fishing lodges. All hotels and accommodation houses are already fully booked for Easter and some, it is expected, will be filled to capacity throughout the intervening period.
