WARM WEATHER
HIGH TEMPERATURES IN HAWKE’S BAY
Tar bubbled on the roadways, several people received treatment for sunstroke, and children and adults in bathing costumes and sunsuits thronged the streets of Napier and Hastings during last week-end, when all Hawke’s Bay sweltered in two of the hottest days of the season. The official shade temperature at Napier on Saturday was 86-sdeg., but there were several unofficial recordings of more than 90deg. In two recordings at Hastings on Saturday the temperature was in the vicinity of 92deg. and there was a recording at Waipawa on Sunday oT 93deg. A cooling breeze off the sea afforded some relief at Napier, but inland towns were not so fortunate. Seeking relief from the heat, thousands of people left the towns for rivers and Deaches. On Sunday afternoon Westshore had its largest crowd of the season and the number of motor-cars at that resort was the greatest seen for several years. t After a long spell m’ extremely dry conditions the grass is tinder dry and the Napier fire brigade has attended an unusually large number of fires this month.
