MUCH EQUIPMENT TO BE DUMPED

DECISION IN AUSTRALIA ACCUMULATIONS IN THE ISLANDS Recd. 8 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 8. Australia is preparing to dump, or destroy, millions of pounds worth of equipment taken by the services to the islands north of Australia. The step is being discussed to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, and Senator Ashley (Minister of Supply), heads of the services and the DiS’ posal Commission. The policy is endoresd by Mr. Chifley following his Christmas visit to New Guinea, where he saw big accumulations of stores made unusable by the weather, but still being guarded by troops. His view is that valuable shipping space would be wasted bringing back to Australia material of very doubtful economic value, and that, the dumping of stores would reduce the size of th 4 force to be mintained in the Islands. Decision as to what will be dumped will he governed by re-sale value on the mainland.
