SMALL SHIPS WANTED
USE BY U.N.R.R.A. IN RELIEF OF CHINA (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 8. The possibility of New Zealand contributing from surplus war assets a number of small ships for immediate use by UNRRA in the relief of China will be investigated by Mr. C. Sone, representtion of UNRRA’s agricul tural rehabilitation division, who a* rived in Auckland by flying-boat from Sydney. Mr. Sone said there was urgent need in China at present for small-powered craft suitable for fishing and for river transport work. If UNRRA could obtain sufficient small ships, convertible for fishing purposes, the lives of countless starving Chinese would be saved. If the Government made some suitable ships available they would go forward as part of New Zealand’s UNRRA contribution. It would depend on the size of indlvidurj craft whether they would be sal?d to China under their own power, or shipped as cargo.
Mr. Sone is an Australian, and before he joined UNRRA was a Sydney shipbuilder. He was met by Lieu-tenant-Commander H. W. Larsen Deputy Director for New Zealand of UNRRA. He will spend about two ■ v*•-’ks in New Zealand and will go tc ngton next week.
