EXCITING FINISH IN CRICKET MATCH

AUCKLAND BEAT WELLINGTON | BY EIGHT RUNS (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 8. Through the sportsmanship of W. M. Wallace in declaring his teams second innings closed when 69 runs had been scored lor the loss o£ four w.ckets and leaving Wellington 217 runs to get to win in two hours, there was an exciting finish to the threeday special match between Auckland and Wellington on the Basin Reserve to-day. Wellington accepted the challenge and only tailed to reach the objective by eight runs, the last Wellington wicket falling m the last over of the day.

The weather was beautifully fine when Wellington, with 153 runs on for the loss of one wicket, continued their first innings in reply to Auckland's 403 for nine wickets (declared). The innings which had opened so promisingly was all over by 2.26 p.m. for a total of 256, which saved a follow-on by three runs. The only bright spot in the innings was the stand made by Ell and Barber which added 36 runs for the fourth wicket in 40 minutes. The only other batsmen to make a stand was J. Kemp who shaped confidently for 32. Of the six bowlers tried -by the Auckland captain, all succeeded in taking wickets, Kerr doing best with four wickets for 47 runs off 26 overs.

With a lead of 147 Auckland opened their second innings at 2.40 p.m. Two wickets fell for 10 runs, Cave taking both at a cost of 7 runs, deal came next and runs came faster Meuli doing some crisp square-cutting off Hatch, and Cleal twice off-driving. Meuli reached 20 and was then taken by Mooney behind the wickets to give Cave his third wicket for 22 runs. At the tea adjournment the score was 69 for four wickets and Wallace declared the innings closed at the interval.

The Wellington innings was characterised by bright batting, the opening batsman, Tind.il, performing brilliantly in scoring 96 in 117 minutes. Beard and Duffy were the only, ones to stay long with Tindill, Beard'helping him to put on 14 for the fourth wicket in 13 minutes and Duffy helping him add 65 for the seventh wicket. The last three batsmen scored one between them, giving Auckland an out-, right win by eight runs.

Cleverley put up a sterling bowling performance in taking eight wickets for 75 runs off 18 overs. He was flighting his fast-medium deliveries
