SUCCESSFUL ATTACK

DR. VAN MOOK IN HOLLAND Reccl. 11 p.m. London, Dec. 20. A report from Allied headquarters in Java to-day speaks for the first lime of Dutch troops being in Java in an operational role. They are reported to have moved forward in one area in an attack and captured many vehicles, ammunition and other booty. The United States Department of State, in a statement issued in Washington expressed the grave concern of the United States at events in Java and urging that the various parlies endeavour to come together for negotiation iii order to find a means of peacefully solving the difficulties.

The statement pointed out, that a mandate to accept the surrender of Lhe Japanese in Java had peen handed to Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, and the United States saw no reason for going outside that mandate.

The Lieutenant Governor of the Netherlands East Indies (Dr. van Mook) who recently flew to Holland for consultation with his Government will shortly visit London for consultations with the British Government.
