WOODVILLE CARD

PROSPECTS DISCUSSED As the Woodville District Jockey Club’s summer fixture will be spread over two Saturdays a fortnight apart, form at the meeting may suffer some reverses and may not be as valuable a guide as usual to the holiday racing at the end of next month. However, notwithstanding the clash with the New Zealand Cup meeting, there are even fields all round and the class is quite good. Eight events are carded, the field for the Maiden Stakes, totalling 27, having been divided to form two separate races, the second and sixth on the programme. The betting will be win-and-place and the first race is to start at 11.45 a.m.

Principal event is the Bolton Handicap, run over a mile and a-quarter, and the nine carded include two dual acceptors, Theolateral (Oete Handicap) and Pink Bonnet (Whariti Hack). Rakanui. who heads the list with 9.8, is a classy customer, but backers may prefer two horses with better recent form in Duality (unlucky at the Levin meeting) and Financial (narrowly beaten into fourth place). Don Mac is a staying hack who will appreciate the drop in weights in open class, and the “iron horse Betterman is always to be respected.

It remains to be seen whether there will be any defections from the nine carded for the open sprint, the Oete Handicap. On Trentham form Ramlcourt would appear to have an excellent chance, even though he will be burdened with 9.9. The stablemates Royal Heir and Lord Theio have good form to commend them, and Sir Bradbury has shaped like an early Improver. The distance may be too short for Rink, who has been galloping well on the tracks. Theolateral and Park Light may do best of the remainder. Two. juveniles that have shaped promisingly in recent essays are Opulent and Gavinmore and they may share favouritism in the Nursery Handicap, in which, despite the small field, there is ample material for a surprise result. The Wanganui-trained Mr. Pym is a smart Gynerium gelding. The hack fields have filled well and should provide interesting contests. There is only one bracket on the card, that being Norse and Ring Scarf in lhe hurdle race, from which Peacn King (10.2) was omitted in th? list of acceptors. Others missed were Bigoted in the Ist. Maiden Stakes and Spear Light (7.7) in the Whariti Hack. The following may appeal:— Mangatua Hurdles. Bettermusk, . Caelus, Norse-Ring Scarf bracket. First Maiden Stakes.—Buldana, Merry Robin.
