VICTORY CUP

RICCARTON-PROSPECTS With two of lhe principal spring handicap events in the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap and two important classic events in the New Zealand Derby and the C J.C. Welcome Stakes, the opening day of the .Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton will provide excellent fare, with four other interesting events in support. Track conditions are likely to be exceptionally hard, and there has been no rain at Christchurch for more than three weeks. Win-and-place betting will be operated, and the upward trend in totalisator turnovers would suggest that last year's figures £156,138 10s, will be substantially exceeded.

The field of twenty remaining in the New Zealand Victorv Cup after thp final acceptances may be further reduced, as some candidates have been showing the effects of the hard tracks. Longsword has a good horse’s task with 9.6 in the saddle, but he has fully earned a reputation as thp leading handicap performer, nd he should not be troubled by the hard track. Signal Officer is reported to be under a cloud. Piccolo was narrowlv defeated bv Golden Souvenir at the Banks Peninsula meeting, and it does not appear likely that, positions will be reversed to-day. Golden Souvenir Is a half-brother to Kindergarten and he looks like dewloping into a good horse. Lance Wing has pleased In his track essays and Langue d’Or, a winner at Otaki fast Saturday, has proved his ability to stay the distance. Palfrev is a good staver but may be held safe by Sir Bian. Mitchelson Cun winner, and Broiefipld. who has not yet shown his best form this season. ** If anv of the tail of the field is to get into a place if mav be Pride of Mossburn or Authentic both promising stayers. A quintet that may appeal to investors should include Longsword, Golden Souvenir, Sir Bian, Langue d’Or and Broiefield.

The Stewards’ Handicap will present just as much of a problem to backers as ever, for there is plenty of smart sprinting material i n the field. Pensacola, last year’s Derby winner, may not be able to do himself justice, and Whackie is better suited when the going is heavy. Reorapa has developed into a’brilliant sprinter, and Sweet Biscuit’s sprinting form is in the top flight. Further down the list are two horses, Irish Note and Tuis, that mav dispute favouritism, and on the winning effort for which Tuis was responsible at the Levin meeting last Saturday. the Revelation mare appears well placed Io repeat that, success. Though eighteen were left in the Derbv there will be several defections, but the field may not be far short of last year’s in numbers. This season’s form for the three-year-olds suggest that Master Robin and Gigli, who shared the honours in the Wellington Guineas, will be fully extended by AlSirat (unlucky at Trentham). The juveniles in the Welcome Stakes include promising sorts in Keening (Wellesley Stakes winner). Blue Trout (runner-up), Julius Caesar. Omit and Indira, while it would not be surprising if Spiora proved a filly of class. The nine-furlono- Riccarton Handicap generally provides an interesting contest, and among those engaged are Martial Note. Dileas and Vafori, who should be expected to play a prominent part.

The following may appeal in their respective engagements:— Middleton Hurdles.—Lunaria, Prince Dolomite, Sandy Cape. Spring Nursery.—Omit, Blue Simon, Spiora. Apprentices’ Handicap.—Falconbridge, Lady Chips, Centime. NZ. Victory Cup—Longsword Sir Bian. Golden Souvenir (or Broiefield). Welcome Stakes.—Blue Trout. Keening. Omit (or Julius Caesar). N.Z.
