EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY Masses of spring blooms, tall vases and low bowls of beautiful flowers made bright splashes of colour in the Okoia Hall for the eighteenth birthday of the Okoia branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held recently. Mrs. Beatlie welcomed visitors from Foretell, Wangaehu, Long Acre, Wanganui and Okoia. Mrs. J. C. Wickham, in ex lending greetings and good wishes, said it always gave her great pleasure to come to Okoia. . Miss Merle Richardson entertained with pianoforte solos. At the conclusion of afternoon tea, the ceremony of lighting the candles on the cake was performed by Mrs. J. C. Wickham, Mrs. Frederick, president Wangaehu, and past presidents of the Okoia branch, Mrs. O'Donnell, Mrs. A. N. McLeod, and G. McLeod, all wishing the branch continued success. The candles were blown out by Mrs. J. Bland. The flower arrangements were judged by popular vote, the decorative competition being won by Mrs. G. R. Jones. .Other competition results were: Lucky handshake, Mrs. C. Pratt; weight of cake, Mrs. Anyon; apron, Mrs. Anderson (Wangaehu). The bring-and-buy stall, in charge of Mrs. Graham, did brisk business. UTIKU BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Utiku branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently in the Presbyterian Hall, Mrs. Becker presiding over a fair attendance of members. There were several apologies. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Maher, the oldest member of the branch, who had recently lost her husband. The president welcomed those present, saying she hoped all would have a profitable meeting. The secretary read the minutes and the treasurer gave the financial statement of accounts. A general discussion took place re a circular from headquarters concerning the W.D. housekeeping scheme, which instructed the branch to carry on as usual. All applications are to go through a branch, and it will be left to the discretion of the advisory members and housekeeper secretary as to wages, etc. There was also a circular read pertaining to the W.D. magazine, which was to have changed hands but was now to be left as usual. The housekeeper secretary reported that a member, who was sick, , was staving at the Re't Home at Kaiango Mos,” Palmerston North. The hospital visitors read their report, which snowed how the visiting was appreciated. A competition was held, resulting in Mrs. G. M. Transom being declared the winner. Members who were taking the dressmaking cla ses reported good progress. Afternoon tea was daintily served by Mrs. Mooie and Miss Peachey.
