EXTRA RATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS
ALLOWANCE IN BRITAIN London, Nov. 14. The Minister of Food, Sir Ben Smith, announced extra rations for Christmas in England Wales, Northern Wales, and Northern Ireland, and for the New Year for Scotland—lib. sugar, 4ozs. sweets, 6ozs. butter and margarine, of which not more than 4ozs. can be taken as butter, 6d worth of carcase meat and 4d worth of canned corned beef.
Sir Ben Smith explained that the addition was possible because Britain had done more than necessary to meet the Washing!era agreements stipulating that Britain should reduce consumption of certain essential foodstuffs to agreed levels. “The result is I have a little food in hand.” he said.
Gift parcels from abroad un to lllbs. are exempted from import licences, and must not contain more than 71bs. of food weight. The entire parcel hitherto was limited to 51bs.
