OPENING NEXT MONTH

SOUTH ISLAM) MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY (P.A.) Wellington, Nov. 14. The South Island Main Trunk railway is likely to be opened about the middle of next month, provided weather conditions are favourable and allow the present intensive construction work to be continued, the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, stated to-day. All materials required to complete the job are available and double shifts are being worked. Mr. Semple said he hoped to be r.ble to hold the official opening ceremony about December 15 at Kaikoura.

The Minister added that one of the remaining jobs of any size to be finished was the construction of a barrel tunnel in open country between two ordinary tunnels. The country was subject to slips and the barrel tunnel was designed to allow such slips to pass over the railway hne.
