OBITUARY
MR. J. J. PICKETT The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. John Joseph Pickett, Hastings, aged 92 years. Mr. Pickett was born in London in 1853 and came to New Zealand 72 years ago in the sailing vessel Jessie Redmond, arriving at Dunedin. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department and after six years in Dunedin was appointed postmaster at Charleston, on the West Coast. He had similar appointments later at Carterton, Foxton, Waipawa, Sratford. Taurang*. Thames, Gisborne and Timaru. from where he retired in 1919. Mr. Pickett, shortly afterward went to Hastings and for some years was on the staff of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald-Tribune.’’ He took an active interest in Freemasonry joining the order more than 50 years ago. He received recognition for his work from the Grand Lodge of New’Zealand. In addition to craft, masonry he was prominent in both Capitular and Rose Croix masonry, and on his 90th birthday he was honoured by the lodges of Hawke’s Bay. His wife predeceased him 17 years ago. He leaves two sons, and two daughters.
