MARTON NOTES

THE SCOTTISH SOCIETY THE CHIEF’S REPORT. In, reporting on the activities of the above society dur.ng the past 12 months, Mr. A. Stuart (cnief) scales: "As in the oast years, the tavelling restrictions and petrol control have* made it impossible lor the committee to obtain outside talent and speakers. Only two functions have been held and have resulted in success financially and otherwise. Burns Night was hem on January 25, 1945, in the Druids' Hall. Tire speaker was Mr. Wm. McKay, of Apiti. His address was of a very high standard and was much appreciated. Wanganui and Marton talent made up the mus.eal part of the evening. The other evening was held in the Victory Hall on May 23, 1945. Wanganui and Palmerston North supplied the talent for that night. Vocal, pipes and instrumental. Pipers also played for several dances. The evening was an outstanding success. The Wanganui Pipe Band gave a concert in the Town Hall in aid of the Scottish Settlers Memorial Fund. This was quite successful. The Marton Society assisted in making the arrangements and in giving supper to the artists. The society is venturing on a big undertaking in the near future, and arrangements are in hand to start, a pupil's class for the purpose of starting a Pipe Band. Pipe-Major Morgan, oi Wanganui had consented to teach the class. He is welt known to us all and is a very capable teacher. It is hoped that all interested will give their enthusiastic support to this worthy project.

The membership is much the same as last year. During the year, the society has lost two members by death. Mr. W. A. Watt and Mr. Wm. Harvey. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the relatives of the respective families." The chief extended the thanks of the society to the office bearers and the committee who have kept the society going, and it is hoped that in the future, now that the war is over, better conditions will prevail for the carrying on of the good work. I offered special thanks to the ladies who have so successfuly carried on the supper arrangements at every function. This section of the society is much appreciated.
