DON’T TRAVEL TO BRITAIN YET
MR. JORDAN’S ADVICE TRANSPORT IN SHORT SUPPLY (P.A.) Christchurch, Nov. 12. 1 “If you are thinking of visiting Britain don’t leave New Zealand unless you are prepared to spend at least 18 1 months in Britain,’’ advised the New Zealand High Commissioner in London (Mr. Jordan) speaking at a civic reception. “At least 4000 people are now waiting in Britain for shipping to bring them back to New Zealand,” he went on. “Since I have been in Christchurch I have handled a constant succession of telephone calls telegrams and letters, all from people wanting me to help them in getting someone out of Britain. I have had 500 of these requests since I returned to New Zealand. It can’t be done, however much I may sympathise with them. The shortage of shipping is the main trouble, and servicemen must first be moved. If you must go to Britain please don’t bother the staff at New Zealand House about your passage home,” Mr. Jordan said.
“Business men who say they must go to see their principals, or to order new machinery, come to New Zealand House and think they can get in ahead of everyone else. They seem so important, that I wonder how they ever managed to find time to leave New Zealand,” said Mr. Jordan with a laugh.
