EMPIRE PRESS CABLES
RETENTION OF PENNY-A-WORD RATE URGED
Recd. 10.40 p.m. Ottawa, Nov. 12. The Canadian Press has sought the Canadian Government’s support in ensuring the retention of the penny-a-word Empire press cable rate. It is understood the withdrawal of the rate, effective since 1941, may be considered at the International Rates Conference in Bermuda on November 19.
Mr. W. A. Buchanan, president of the Canadian Press, sent a letter to the Department of External Affairs describing the rate as an effective means of strengthening Empire ties, not only for the United Kingdom but among the Dominions and Colonies.
Outlining the progressive reduction of the Empire rate, the letter added that from the outset the basis of the demand for the Empire penny rate was the need for the closest possible liaison. Withdrawal of the penny rate must result in a sharp curtailment of Canadian newspapers’ plans to extend their staffs in coverage of Empire countries. This would be a tragedy.
