SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean, Mrs. H. C. Jenkins, Miss B. Matthews, and Miss E. Ma.thews returned to Wanganui at the week-end after spending a week in Napier. HITHER AND THITHER Mother's Helpers’ Society The monthly meeting of the Mother's Helpers' Society was held in the Victoria j.eague rooms on Friday, November 9, Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean presiding over a good attendance. Members arranged >o staff a table for the sale of Health Stamps in December. Mrs. C. S. Ryan was appointed to represent the society at the “More For Britain” meeting on November 15. The secretary’s report s ated that four helpers were engaged at the present time assisting where most needed. BRIDE-TO-BE ENTERTAINED. Mrs. W. R. S. Brewer and Mrs. I’. V. Graves, Waverley, were joint hostesses at an enjoyable “China" party, which was held at Mrs. Brewer’s home, “Waihau." The guest of honour, Miss Pat Pearce, was wearing a smart navy suit, with shoulder spray of scarlet roses. To receive their guests, Mrs. Brewer wore a saxe blue jersey crepe frock, and shoulder spray of pink roses. Mrs. Graves was wearing a floral silk frock with spray of mauve flowers. The drawing-room was gay with bowls of beautiful tulips. The afternoon passed all too quickly with music, songs, community singing, reflations and a competition. Delicious afternoon tea was served in the dining room, after which Miss Pearce opened the many parcels of pretty and useful china, she thanked Mrs. Brewer and Mrs. Graves for the delightful party and her friends for their gifts and good wishes.

RESIDENTIAL NURSERY

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive formed for the establishment of a residential nursery in Wanganui was held recently. Those present were: Miss J. MacDonald, Mesdames A. H. Mac Lean, G. Wells, C. S. Ryan, K. Aiken, C. A. Piper, W. J. Tripe, A. R. Spurdie, H. L. Williams, and H. R. Morgan. Apologies were received from Mrs. T. F. Latham and Mrs. C. Georgetti. Mrs. A. H. Mac Lean was elected chairman and Miss J. MacDonald vicechairman. It was decided to invite those interested to become members, the annual subscription to be 10s. A report was given ias to buildings available, most oi these, it was stated, being for sale. It was decided that a further endeavour be made to lease a suitable house. Plans were discussed for the street day, to be held by the Mothers’ Helpers’ Society, an tlte third Wednesday of this month, to raise funds for the nursery, and also the shop day to be held by the country members on the same day. The hope was expressed that the public would respond generously to this appeal, which will help to supply much needed assistance to the mothers in both country and city.

Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. ACTIVITIES

Activities at the Y.M.C.A.-Y.W.C.A. during the month have included Saturday dances with a successful “Hallowe’en,” when there was fun for all in the “Chamber of Horrors” and the “Ghost Story.” The savoury supper was also in character.

The combined Table Tennis Club held a Yankee tournament to officially close the season, the winners being Miss Fay Vine and Mr. Lawrence Robertson. Votes of thanks for services during the season were accorded to the captain, Mr. Russell Delvin, and the secretary, Miss Elda Heayns. The choir members arranged an evening in honour of Miss June Harrison on her approaching marriage. The basketball teams completed their season by a “break-up” dinner and picture party, with farewells to several brides--10-be among their members. The Business Girls’ Lyceum held a progressive games evening and had a much appreciated talk by Mr. Lowe on rehabilitation. With help from the Everygirls’ Club, the members have carried out the soldiers’ teas an Sunday in a most acceptable way. Up to 25 men at a time have been served. Tea-Time Rendezvous had a demonstration of hand work by Mrs. A. C. McLean and have made articles for the “shop.” At their combined tea with Everyman's Club, Mr. Norman Parkes gave an absorbing talk on his experiences with the Arabs during the war. Everygirls’ Club held a concert and a social programme centering round brides-to-be among the members. Gift making and an auction towards the annual “shop” were also on their programme. The new girls’ club, Younger Business Giris has a members’ list of 15, and spent a profitable week-end at Gastiecliff in Mr. Whitlocks house. Discussions were held on Mrs. Mackie Beggs’ report, regarding religious broadcasting from the Christchurch conference and groups outlined ideas for such broadcasts and for services in the open air for youth. Girl Citizens have appreciated dancing lessons from Miss Bishop. A demonstration of floral work was given by Miss Anderson, when a hospital box was arranged and sent to Mr. Ray Ward, a member of the School Theatre. Live Y-ers held their first evening party with boys and followed this up by a discussion on standards of behaviour. The School of Theatre have been working on the production of two plays nnd have helped various groups in their preparation of a vouth pageant for the week of prayer. The pageant was prepared and written by Mrs. Patterson. Primary gym class has been conducted by Miss Betty Harris on Saturday mornings. Palmerston North and Wellington Associations have invited registrations from lads and girls for holiday camps in the Marlborough Sounds, and several have come in.
