OBITUARY
MR. CHARLES J. SHARPE Following a short illness, Mr. Charles John Sharpe, a well-known figure in Wanganui business circles and prominent in friendly society activities, died on Saturday morning in his 66th year. The tiiird son of the late Mr. and J. G. Sharpe, former residents of St. John's Hill, Mr. Sharpe was born in Wanganui in 1878 and had resided here all his life. Educated at the Wanganui Boys’ High School, later the Victoria Avenue Schqol, and the Wanganui Collegiate School, Mr. Sharpe, on leaving school, joined the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand and later was in the employ iof Levin and Company. For many years he was in partnership with Mr. A. J. North in tire auctioneering firm of Sharpe and North, and in recent years he took in Mr. W. Battell as partner when Mr. North left for Australia. In his y ounger days Mr. Sharpe was an active member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Victoria Avenue, being one of Lije original members of the Trin.ly \oung Men’s Institute. Later, he- centred his activities in the Wesley Church, Gonville, and was choirmaster for some years. Secretary, and later chairman, of the Gonville Schoo’ Committee, he was also a member of the Beard of Managers of the Wanganui Technical College. For nine years he was on the Wanganui City Council, and he had also been on the'Wanganui Hospital Board. ■ A keen and active member of the Druids’ Lodge, of which he was secretary for a number of years, he was one of the foundation members of the United Friendly Societies’ organisation. He was also a keen bowler, being a member of the Gonville Bowling Club. Mr. Sharpe was predeceased two years ago by his wife. He leaves three sons, Messrs Bernard (Nelson), Clarence (Hamilton) and Kenneth Sharpe (in the armed forces) and two daughters, Mrs. A. Bell and Mrs. W. G. Butler, both of Wanganui. Messrs. Robert Sharpe (Wanganui) and John Sharpe (Pukeatua) are brothers, and Mrs. W. Paul (Pukeatua), Mrs. R. Hope (Christchurch) and Miss E. Sharpe (Christchurch) are sisters. The funeral will take place this
