HEAVY WATER CONSUMPTION
DEMANDS ON CITY SUPPLY During the 24 hours ended 8 a.m. yesterday, slightly more than 3,500,iiOO gallons ot water were used in Wanganui for domestic and industrial purposes. “This is high consumpton, but not exceptional,’’ commented the assistant city engineer, Mr. W. J. Frethey. “With the resumption of heavy industries, such as the freezing works,” he added, “a higher consumption is expected from now onward. The greatest care should be exercised to prevent wastage of water. Householders should not leave hoses running unattended, as this causes considerable loss.’ - At present the Westmere reservoir has a depth of 12ft. Bin., and the level of the Okehu dam is 12ft. below the spillway. Since Christmas Eve spring water from Kai Iwi has been pumped with the Okehu supply. While the present position is considered satisfactory, it is stated that the continued hot weather is creating extra demands on reservoirs. Wastage now may create a definite shortage if the rainless weather continues.
