RUAPEHU HOME GUARD

RECENT RANGE PRACTICES Recent rifle range practices, carried out by A and B Companies ot the Ruapehu Battalion of the Home Guard at Pungatawa and Rangiwaea respectively, were marked by considerable enthusiasm. The competitive team shoots, on a handicap basis, were keenly contested by A Company personnel. The first resulted in a win for Cpl. R. Turner, R. O. Batley and S. Jackson, with an aggregate score of 167. Cpl. J. Marshall A. Allan and W. Ross were next with 158, and Capt. G. E. Gibbs, Sgt. Sherriff and S. Cummings filled third place with 148. Individual highest net scores were: Cpl. Turner 57, S. Cummings 49 and W. Ross 46.

In the second competition Capt. G. E. Gibbs, Sgt. Sherriff and S. Cummings carried off the team honours with an aggregate score of 153. Second place went to L/Cpl. M. Meredith, D. McCarthy and B. McCulloch, with 141, and third to Lieut. W. T. May, C. Bird and R. Floyd, with 134. The top individual net score in this section was made by J. Gilbert 39, D. McCarthy and D. McDowall were next with 38 each. Teams consisted of three.

Conditions were ideal at Rangiwaea for B Company’s competition, consequently th? shooting was good. The best aggregate was put up by Sgt.Major A. R. Murdoch, A. Gregory. C. Arthur and J. Waterson, with a score of 238. J. Newton, L. Newton, P. Broderick and F. Howie were second with 227, and Major-G. B. Chrystall, Capt. D. S. Livingston, Sgt. K. Brophy and A. J. Taylor were third with 226. The best net aggregate was registered by a team of officers, Lieuts. A. D. Mair, E. A. Peters, A. R. Collier and A. Dunford with 212. Fine individual net scores ot 57 were made by Sgt.-Major A. R. Murdoch, F. Howie and J. Waterson, while S. Beard was close up with a 56, and Lieuts. Collier and Mair secured 54 each. Teams consisted of four.
